How the Economy Forced Me To Start My Own Small Business

by Andrew Fuqua
(Sherman TX, USA)

My name is Andrew and I was in the restaurant management industry for close to 15 years until the economy finally claimed my positions life. With the extremely high unemployment rate I was forced to come up with something other than working for minimum wage, something new.

I had always been very artistic and good at doing home remodelling so I decided to try to get the word out to people I knew that I could fix almost anything in their house. Well before I could finish my first job, I had 2 other people lined up after that job. So I decided to get my State licenses, print up some business cards, and build myself a website.

This is great for me because now I can take some pictures of some of my jobs when I finish them and post them to my website for my future customers to see. This isn't a type of business for everyone but this is just a success story of how easy it is to take a hobby or talent, and turn it into a great business.

I easily went from working 50-60 hours a week, living pay check to pay check, and feeling much unaccomplished, to making my own hours, getting myself out of debt, and loving what I do! And the best thing about my business is that it didn't cost me my life savings or an arm and a leg to start.

I had pretty much all of the tools I needed to complete my work and I could operate my business out of my house. The only thing that cost me was getting my licenses in my state and printing up some business cards. So just remember that hard work and always believing in yourself is the key to great success. Hope this helps!
