How To Clean a Rusty Cast Iron Griddlle on Mobile Catering Van

I am about to buy my first trailer although it needs a bit of a clean, the griddle is cast iron and looks rusty, the dealer recons it will scrub clean and it will be ok.

Is that true and if so what’s the best way of cleaning it.

How To Clean a Cast Iron Griddle

The dealer is right when I brought my catering van it had the same problem ? a rusty looking griddle I really thought it needed to be changed. I soon discovered that because the griddle had not been used for a while it went rusty. (surface rust)

Start by removing the worst of the rust gently with a wire brush, glass paper or steel wool and then wipe down griddle with some soapy water and a sponge. Make sure to really clean the rust particles from the griddle or it will turn up when you are cooking the food.

From here dry the griddle thoroughly by turning it on and making sure all the water has evaporated.

Finally season the griddle by coating it with vegetable oil (or similar) which can be applied with a soft cloth, paper towel or even a small brush.

Allow the oil to really heat up before turning off the griddle. From here it should be fine to cook on the next time you need to use it.
