Small Business Plan

How to Write a Small Business Plan.

Anyone that is thinking about starting their own business, whether it is an online business or a “brick and mortar” business, should take the time to create a business plan. Most people only think about writing a business plan if they are going to seek outside financing, the bottom line is that if you want to succeed in your business  you should invest the time and effort into writing a business plan.

What is a business plan?

A business plan is basically your road map to success and the steps that you are going to take to get there.Just as you would plan a long distance journey in your car like where to stop, where to re-fuel, motorways to avoid and the quickest route, so you should plan your business journey.

Many people look at their business plan as a way to get financing to help start their business or expand a current business. Yes, this is one use of the business plan, but your business plan is really the blue print that lays out every detail you must have to build a business that is going to make you money.

What is a Business Plan Used for

The business plan is has a number of purposes. The most important of those reasons is that it makes you put into writing what your plan is and what your goals are. Don’t laugh this off. You need to know why you are going into business, what you plan to accomplish with your business and how you are going to get there.

For example, let’s say that your reason for going into business is to become financially independent. That’s great, take a look at your finances. Do you currently have enough money in your savings to pay your household expenses for the next six months? What money do you have to invest in your business? How much do you need to invest to get started? Do you need outside financing to get started?

As those questions stir around in your mind understand that answering those questions is just the beginning. This is your foundation. You wouldn't’t build a house without laying down a solid foundation, you can’t build a business without one either.

Do I need a Small Business Plan?

The answer is plain and simple, yes you need a business plan. It really doesn't’t matter if your business is going to be home based/internet business or a brick and mortar business. What is a brick and mortar business? That is the type of business where you go out and pick the location, set up shop and run your business from there. Any business where you walk in the front door is a brick and mortar business.

Now, many people make the mistake of thinking that if they are going to start an internet business all it takes is a few clicks of a mouse and you are up and running. Then you will be just like so many failing internet business out there. You need a plan. You need to know where you are starting from, what you have to work with, what resources you need, what your competition is, what you need to do reach your goals, and in what time frame.

Where do I Begin?

Depending on whom you ask, the answer could be to look at your finances to clearly stating what your business is. I recommend that you clearly state what your business is. Don’t just say I want to be retail store that sells clothes. What type of clothes do you want to sell? Where will you get them, How much do you sell the for and how much income can the business generate.

You need to know what your business is going to be. From there you can move into all other aspects of building your business plan.
