What Is a Virtual Assistant?

Virtual assistants are a lot like a personal assistant, except they work in the virtual world.  that doesn't mean that you have a virtual person helping you if you hire an assistant of this kind.  Instead, it means that the majority of their work is done over the Internet.  Most virtual assistants work in their own offices or from their homes, instead of coming to your office to help you.

If a client needs someone to handle day to day tasks that they don't have time to deal with on their own, but can't afford to or don't want to deal with hiring full time staff, a virtual assistant is an excellent choice.  Virtual assistants act as administrative support, taking care of clients' needs and allowing clients to focus on their business, not administrative tasks.  The great thing is that being a virtual assistant can be done from home, using your own software and equipment.

What Special Skills or Equipment Do I Need?

Virtual assistants will need to have experience in word processing, spreadsheets , as well as good proofreading and typing skills.  They should have excellent Internet experience and enjoy learning new things.  They'll need some specialized software, their own computer, a high speed Internet connection and the drive to help people.  Remember that you have to be a self starter in this kind of business, but if you are, your chances of success are quite good.

How Do I Start a Business as a Virtual Assistant?

Starting a business as a virtual assistant is relatively simple.  You'll need to make sure that you have all the equipment and skills needed to start up in this business, and you'll need to make sure you have a few definite clients.  There's nothing worse than being in business, but having no one to buy your services.

Analyze your background and skills to decide what services you want to offer, and decide if there's a need for them in your area.  Outline who your clients will be, where they are, and how you'll stay in touch with them.  Find out what they need and see if you can provide it, and know what kind of income your expect.

Remember that it takes at least six months for most businesses to get off the ground.Like any other type of small business startup, you should make a business plan and check it over frequently, and know what your tax obligations will be.  Accounting can get much more complicated when you're self employed!

Do I Need to Register When Starting a Business as a Virtual Assistant?

Depending on where you live, you may have to register your business.  However, in many areas this will not be necessary.  Check your local laws to find out whether registration will be required if you become a virtual assistant.

Can I Make a Living As a VA?

Yes, you can!  There are many people making a living working as virtual assistants from their own homes.  However, the amount you make will depend on your skills, the market for them, and how much you're willing to work.

It's possible to be either full or part time as a virtual assistant, and there are many ways to bill - hourly, by the job, by the page, or in some cases by the word.  It depends on the kind of work you're doing.  How much you make will also depend on the area Smaller regions will pay less than large metropolitan areas, but the beauty of this line of work is that you can make the same anywhere, since where you're based doesn't really matter.

Can I Work From Home?

Working from home is just about the easiest way to be a virtual assistant.  There's no need to rent office space, as long as you have the equipment and other requirements for the job.  Make sure you have an office at home, though.  Otherwise, it could be hard to do your work, especially if you have children and pets and remember that you can deduct some part of your home from your taxes each year if you use it as an office. Consult with an accountant to find out more.

How Do I Get Clients?

Finding clients can be one of the trickiest things about becoming a virtual assistant, but don't despair.  Remember that you have to find your clients or help them find you.  Use business cards, Internet forums, and be sure to put up a high quality website.  Hire a professional if you need to - your site is the face you show the world.

Talk to friends and old business associates, too.  They may know someone who needs your services.  Advertise all the time - just be sure not to allow it to be too intrusive.  Advertising your services in a forum where you don't ordinarily contribute looks suspicious.  Be upbeat and positive, and remember that it can take a while for word to get around.  Do the best job you can for every client, and they'll tell their friends and associates about you.

What is a Confidentiality Agreement?

As a virtual assistant, you may be asked to sign a confidentiality agreement.  This agreement states that you won't discuss certain topics you're working on.  Remember that this is a serious legal agreement!  You shouldn't discuss these topics with your partner, children, friends, relatives, or anyone else.  If you're unsure what your confidentiality agreement covers, ask questions before you sign.
