Starting a Cooking Recipe Class Business -

I am Sujata - and want to share my experience on how I started to earn extra money to support my family. My husband had a good job providing me and my two sons with all the comforts. But he decided to leave his job to start up a business on his own in a new location. During the start-up his business had its fair share of problems and we had to sacrifice some of our comforts to make ends meet.

My sons at the time were 15 and 8 and I wanted to do something so that at least they did not suffer. I was not working at the time event though I am a graduate with computer knowledge, as my husband wanted me to stay at home and take care of our children.

Now, I decided to take care by starting to earn at home. I am a good cook and love to make new dishes. I decided to start Cooking Recipes Classes. The dishes I selected were two types-quick snacks with high nutrition value and special sweets. I made the dishes which both my sons liked very much and which were easy and could be made quickly.

I wrote the recipes – which I devoted extra time too, as my handwriting is not great - and made Photo copies of these recopies. I placed a classified add in the local newspaper and also made a board to display in my locality.

When i received response to the listing, I meet with a group of between 4 to 8 ladies and arranged the recipe class depending upon the convenience of the group. I bought all the ingredients needed for all the recipes and made the preparation for the class. On the D-day, I demonstrated the 8 recipes of the snacks and gave a portion from each to all the participants to take home so that their kids taste and approve.

Now I received word of mouth publicity and I had to conduct the recipe classes 5 to 6 days a week. But by doing this I was able to earn enough so that I could give back at least some of the comforts to my kids till my husband started earning enough.

by: Edith

Hi, I like your post, I have been dreaming about starting my catering business which is really hard due to all restriction on state rules.. I love cooking and also thought about doing a freelancing personal chef, but reading your post and the idea will be a good place to start, but I'm just not sure where exactly can I teach these classes, where did you do it? at your kitchen? and how much did you charge?/
