Working in a Summer Camp:Ideas For Teens

Teens Business Ideas Working In A Summer Camp

Working at a Summer Camp is one of the most rewarding and unique teens business ideas that a teen can consider. This is because working at a Summer Camp is a true work of selfless service. Teens are required to put their own needs and wants to the side so that they can focus on the campers that they are working with. This truly teaches teens about service and allows them to truly gain a sense of responsibility.

When it comes to teens business ideas, working in a Summer Camp, is by and far one of the easiest types of employment to gain. However, there are a variety of qualifications that a teen must receive before they can be employed at a Summer Camp. Though this varies from camp to camp there are many qualifications that are the same from one camp to another.

First and foremost, in order to be in a paid position at a Summer Camp, most camps require their employees to be 17 years of age or older. Even at age 17, those employees are not permitted to be alone with campers and must always have an adult present. However, many camps run what is known as a Counselor In Training (CIT) program, wherein teens from age 13 and up can work at Summer Camp, however, they will not receive pay.  Instead they will receive special training in various aspects of camp that they can later use when they have reached the age wherein they can obtain a paid position at Summer Camp.

Working in a Summer Camp:The Many Qualifications of Camp Workers

As stated before there are many qualifications that Summer Camps seek out in their employees. First and foremost, most camps require these Camp Counselors to be certified in First Aid and in CPR. However, the good news is that 95% of all camps in the United States and many in the U.k provide this training during their Staff Training week. Secondly, 90% of all Summer Camps require all their employees to have lifeguard certification. Once again, most Summer Camps offer this type of training during their Staff Training Week.

If you are considering a job at a Summer Camp, you should contact their office and ask what qualifications they are seeking in employees. This will allow you to clearly know what is expected of you, so that you can begin preparing both yourself and your resume to meet these standards.

Working in a Summer Camp Things To Consider?

One thing many teens don’t consider is how different a Summer Camp job is from a typical job. Most Summer Camps operate for three solid months a year. During this time they generally operate 6 days a week with a 24-hour period off. In most cases all staff members are required to be working and on camp property 6 days a week 24-hours a day with only a single 24-hour period off. This makes this job very unique from other type of jobs that teens can seek out.

During this time Camp Counselors are required to live with children of various ages and are responsible for every aspect of their stay at Summer Camp. This is a lot of hard work but can also be very rewarding. Still, this type of job is not for everyone. Only those teens with a true “servants heart” will succeed at becoming an effective camp counselor.

Additionally, it should be noted that 95% of Summer Camps only offer employment seasonal. This means that a teen is very unlikely to find full-time employment at a Summer Camp. Additionally, the pay for Camp Counselors is very low. However, working at a Summer Camp is one of the most life-changing career choices that a young teen can make.
